168-04 - ICM

Case IH 168-04 - ICM – ICM: VBatt line in fault (short to ground - blown fuse)

Issue description

The unswitched battery voltage supply line (VBatt+) that powers the instrument cluster has experienced a short circuit to ground, causing the circuit's protective fuse to blow.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger AFS Connect
  • Quadtrac AFS Connect
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Farmall
  • Optum

Check the cause

  1. Check the unswitched power (VBatt+) fuse dedicated to the Instrument Cluster to confirm it is blown

  2. Disconnect the main wiring harness connector at the rear of the Instrument Cluster Module (ICM) to isolate the short

  3. Using a multimeter, test the VBatt supply pin on the harness side for continuity to ground to determine if the short is in the harness or internal to the ICM

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent further electrical damage or accidental shorts during testing.

  2. Access the ICM

Remove the dashboard trim or steering column cowlings required to access the rear of the Instrument Cluster Module.

  3. Perform Isolation Test

Unplug the cluster and perform the multimeter continuity test on the VBatt supply pin.

  4. Repair the Harness

If the harness is shorted, trace the VBatt wire back to the fuse panel. Look for pinch points near the steering column tilt mechanism or areas where the harness rubs against the metal chassis. Splice and repair the damaged wire using heat-shrink connectors, then re-loom the harness.

  5. Replace the ICM

If the harness tests perfectly fine, the internal power stage of the cluster has failed and shorted out. Remove the mounting screws and replace the Instrument Cluster Module with a new or remanufactured unit.

  6. Replace the Fuse

Install a new fuse of the exact OEM specified amperage into the fuse panel.

  7. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition key to the ON position, and verify that the instrument cluster powers up correctly. Clear the 168-04 inactive fault code using a diagnostic tool.
