Case IH 168 – Armrest Controller: PTO ON/OFF switch is failed in the Armrest Controller

The central powertrain Electronic Control Unit (ECU) or the armrest module is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal from the main Power Take-Off (PTO) engagement switch located in the cab's right-hand armrest.

   Test the Switch: The PTO switch is typically a 4-pin push-button locking command switch. Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to check for continuity across the contacts when the button is engaged and disengaged.

   Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check for places where the wiring harness may have rubbed through under the cab, inside the armrest console, or at the connector base.

   Check Armrest Communication: Verify that the Armrest Controller is communicating properly with the tractor's CAN bus. Check the 4 main wires going to the ARM module: 12V Power (Red), Ground (Black), CAN High (Yellow, should be ~2.5V), and CAN Low (Green, should be ~2.4V). If the whole armrest is dead, the issue is the controller or harness, not just the switch.

   Check for Concurrent Codes: Look for related codes like 169 or 170 (which also indicate PTO switch failures) or CAN communication errors (e.g., 'ERR COM').

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent power surges to the ECU.

   Access the Switch

   Remove the retaining screws on the right-hand armrest side console or integrated control panel to access the underside of the operator control layout.

   Disconnect the Module

   Locate the heavy-duty threaded collar holding the PTO switch in place. Unplug the 4-pin electrical connector from the bottom of the switch.

   Remove the Failed Switch

   Unscrew the mounting collar and push the 40mm rounded button profile up and out of the armrest panel.

   Install the New Switch

   Drop the new OEM switch into the panel slot, secure it tightly with the threaded collar, and reconnect the 4-pin harness.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reinstall the armrest console cover. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, clear the stored 168 fault code via the diagnostic display, and test the PTO engagement to ensure the hydraulic PTO clutch pack solenoid activates without error.
