Case IH 169 – Armrest Controller (ARM) / Tractor Multi-Function (TMF) controller: PTO ON/OFF switch is failed in the Armrest Controller

The controller is detecting an invalid electrical state (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power) from the PTO switch located on the armrest console.

   Check the wiring harness under the cab and around the armrest pivot points for any rubbed, chafed, or broken wires

   Inspect the multi-pin electrical connectors at the armrest controller and the back of the PTO switch for corrosion, loose pins, or moisture damage

   Use a digital multimeter to test the PTO ON/OFF switch for proper continuity when toggled between the ON and OFF positions

   Verify the integrity of the hardwired connection between the armrest controller and the PTO controller (if this wire fails, secondary codes like PTO 1016 or PTO 1017 may be present)

   Safety First

   Park the tractor on hard, level ground. Turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and remove the key. Place blocks in front of and behind the wheels.

   Access the Switch

   Carefully remove the retaining screws and lift the upper trim panel of the armrest console to access the underside of the PTO ON/OFF switch.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the OEM multi-pin electrical connector from the faulty PTO switch.

   Remove

   Unclip or unscrew the failed PTO switch from the armrest housing.

   Install New Switch

   Insert the replacement OEM PTO switch into the armrest housing and secure it in place.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector into the new switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place securely.

   Reassemble

   Reinstall the armrest console covers and trim panels.

   Calibration/Testing

   Turn the key on and clear any stored fault codes. Test the PTO switch to ensure it engages and disengages the PTO correctly. Crucial Safety Test: Verify that the safety interlocks work—ensure the engine will not start if the PTO switch is left in the ON position, and verify that the PTO shuts down if the operator leaves the seat.
