Case IH 169 – Armrest Controller (ARM): Invalid Configuration - Hitch TRAVEL potentiometer is failed.

The controller is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing voltage signal from the hitch travel potentiometer located in the cab. This means the system cannot determine the physical position of the operator's hitch command, usually disabling the hitch's automatic functions or locking it out entirely to prevent damage.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors inside the armrest console for chewed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Unplug the potentiometer and test it with a multimeter. It should read 10,000 ohms (± 10%) across pins A to C. If it reads open or out of range, it has internally failed.

   Turn the key ON and check the harness side of the connector to ensure the Armrest Controller is supplying a 5-volt reference signal and a solid ground.

   If resistance is within spec, connect an analog multimeter to the signal pin and slowly turn the potentiometer dial to verify the resistance/voltage scales smoothly without dropouts or dead spots.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts while working inside the armrest.

   Access the Module

   Remove the retaining screws on the armrest console cover to expose the internal hitch control modules and potentiometers.

   Remove the Failed Sensor

   Locate the hitch travel potentiometer. Unplug its 3-pin electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws securing it to the armrest housing and pull the potentiometer out.

   Install the New Part

   Insert the replacement potentiometer, secure it with the retaining hardware, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Reassemble

   Reinstall the armrest console cover and reconnect the battery.

   Mandatory Calibration

   Perform a Hitch Position Command Calibration cycle using the tractor's display monitor or diagnostic tool so the Armrest Controller can learn the new minimum and maximum voltage sweeps of the replacement part.
