Case IH 17 – Armrest Controller: Hitch Position Command potentiometer failed in the Armrest controller
Issue description
The electronic potentiometer (the dial or lever located in the cab's armrest that the operator uses to set the rear 3-point hitch depth/position) is sending an invalid signal to the system. This is typically caused by an internal failure of the potentiometer, a short circuit, an open circuit, or a voltage drop.

Check the cause
Inspect connector J206 at the armrest controller for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins.
Disconnect the potentiometer and measure the total resistance across cavity 1 and cavity 3. The specification is 900 to 1100 ohms.
Verify potentiometer rotation. The sensor should read 120 degrees of rotation, with the signal increasing during clockwise (CW) rotation.
Test supply voltage at the wiring harness side of connector J206. Cavity 1 should receive 8 volts of regulated power from the controller, Cavity 3 is ground, and Cavity 2 is the signal return.
Repair steps
Access the Armrest
Disassemble the multi-function armrest console to access the hitch position command potentiometer.
Replace the Potentiometer
If the sensor fails the resistance test or has a dead spot, disconnect connector J206, unbolt the faulty potentiometer, and install the replacement unit.
Clear Fault Codes
Resolve or erase all hitch-related fault codes from the display.
Warm Up the Tractor
Ensure the transmission oil is warmed to more than 38°C (100°F) and ensure the tractor is parked (do not calibrate while moving). Ensure the hitch can move fully between its minimum and maximum limits without interference.
Perform Hitch Calibration
Turn the key switch to the ON position. Within the first 10 seconds, use the display keys to toggle to the ARM (Armrest) or HITCH calibration menus. Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the hitch position command potentiometer.
