Case IH 17 – Electronic Draft Control (EDC) module: Load sensing pin short circuit to +12 Volts, failed or corroded load sensing pin

Issue description

The system is receiving an abnormally high voltage signal (a short to power) from the draft load sensing pin, or the pin/connector has failed or severely corroded, disrupting the normal reference voltage required to measure the draft load on the 3-point hitch.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the triangular electrical connectors for the load sensing pins (located under the rear of the cab near the lower link arms) for heavy corrosion, moisture intrusion, or loose pins.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the load sensing pins back to the EDC controller, looking for chafed wires or melted insulation that could cause a short circuit to a +12V power source.

  3. Test the reference voltage at the pin connector to verify if the short is in the harness or internal to the pin itself (normal reference voltage is typically 8 Volts; exceeding this flags a short).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Clean/Repair Wiring

    Disconnect the wiring harness from the affected load sensing pin. Clean the connector terminals thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner. If the harness is damaged and shorting to +12V, splice and repair the damaged section.

  3. Replace the Pin

    If the harness and connectors test good, the load sensing pin has failed internally. Remove the retaining hardware and extract the faulty load sensing pin from the lower link arm. Install the new load sensing pin and reconnect the harness.

  4. Alternative Repair (Pin Elimination)

    If the operator does not use the auto-draft control feature and wants a cost-effective fix, install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit. Unplug the two draft pins, plug in the eliminator modules, and secure them with tie wraps. This disables draft sensing and prevents the EDC from throwing Code 17 while allowing normal 3-point hitch position control.

  5. Clear Codes & Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery. Clear the error codes from the EDC system. You must then perform a hydraulic lift auto-calibration (often triggered via H-Menu or diagnostic tool) to initialize the new sensors.
