Case IH 170 – TMF (Tractor Management Function) or Armrest Controller: PTO ON/OFF switch is failed in the Armrest Controller

The PTO ON/OFF switch is hardwired directly to the armrest controller. The PTO controller receives the PTO ON/OFF signal from the armrest via the CAN_BUS network, while the 'PTO ON' signal is also directly wired from the armrest to the PTO controller. The fault triggers when the system detects a failure in this switch's circuit or signal state.

   Check for cascading fault codes: ARM 1039 (confirms switch failure in armrest) or PTO 1016 / PTO 1017 (indicates physical 'PTO ON' wire failure)

   Inspect the wiring harness for rubbed or chafed wires under the cab, or rodent damage

   Inspect the switch connector to ensure no pins have been pushed back inside

   Check the 10-amp fuse that powers the PTO brake switch, PTO ON/OFF switch, and PTO warning lamp to ensure it is not blown

   Test the continuity of the PTO switch using a volt/ohm meter to confirm internal failure

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the tractor's battery power to protect the CAN_BUS modules.

   Disassemble console

   Disassemble the armrest console to access the internal switch wiring.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the faulty PTO ON/OFF switch, checking again for any pushed-back pins or melted plastic.

   Remove switch

   Remove the failed toggle/switch assembly from the armrest housing.

   Install replacement switch

   Install the replacement PTO switch and reconnect the wiring harness.

   Reassemble console

   Reassemble the armrest console.

   Clear fault codes

   Restore battery power, turn the key on while holding the 'diag' button to enter the diagnostic menu, navigate to 'PTO', and clear the fault codes.
