Issue description
The controller managing the Power Take-Off (PTO) has encountered a logic error, an invalid calibration state, or an unexpected software condition that prevents normal PTO operation.

Check the cause
Inspect the PTO solenoid and speed sensor connectors for water intrusion or corrosion, which can cause erratic signals.
Verify if a recent PTO calibration failed or was interrupted.
Check for concurrent TMF codes (like 172, 173, 178, or 179) which might indicate a physical sensor or solenoid failure triggering the software fault.
Repair steps
Locate the PTO Connector
Refer to the electrical schematic in your specific model's repair manual (e.g., frame 49 for Magnum 215 tractors) to locate the main PTO harness connector.
Clean and Dry the Connection
Disconnect the harness. Use electrical contact cleaner to remove any moisture, dirt, or corrosion from the pins.
Install Sealing Plug
To prevent the software fault from returning due to moisture ingress, install the updated OEM sealing plug into the connector.
Clear Codes and Recalibrate
Use a diagnostic scan tool (like the EST) to clear the TMF 171 code. Perform a PTO clutch calibration.
Software Update
If the code persists after ensuring the wiring is dry and calibrated, the TMF controller will require a software reflash/update by an authorized Case IH dealer to resolve the logic error.
