Case IH 175 – TMF / CCH: PTO Clutch has not reached lock up speed within 6 seconds of being turned ON
Issue description
This fault indicates that after the operator activates the Power Take-Off (PTO) switch, the system's speed sensor fails to detect the PTO shaft reaching its target engagement speed within the allowed 6-second window. This is typically caused by mechanical clutch slippage, a heavy/jammed implement load, a loss of hydraulic clutch pressure, or a failure in the PTO speed sensor circuit.

Check the cause
Disconnect the implement and test the PTO bare. If it engages normally, the implement may be too heavy, jammed, or the clutch is slipping under load.
Check the transmission/hydraulic oil level and inspect the oil for a burnt smell (clutch overheating) or metal particles (bearing/gear wear).
Test the PTO speed sensor resistance (should read between 2700-3300 ohms).
Check the wiring harness for continuity from the sensor to the TMF/CCH module, ensure the sensor connector is clean, and verify the sensor has the proper air gap from the tone wheel.
Perform a hydraulic pressure test at the PTO clutch pressure test port with PTO engaged at ~1500 RPM (expected pressure is 155-165 PSI or 240-270 PSI depending on model).
Verify that the PTO control solenoid is receiving voltage and is not mechanically sticking.
Repair steps
Rule out the Sensor
If the PTO shaft is physically spinning at full speed but the tractor throws Code 175 and shuts it down, the speed sensor is likely faulty. Remove the sensor from the rear PTO housing, check the O-ring (ensure it isn't holding the sensor too far out), and replace the sensor if it fails the resistance test.
Test and Replace the Solenoid
If the PTO shaft does not spin or slips, and hydraulic pressure at the test port is low, the PTO solenoid valve may be failing to meter oil to the modulator piston. Remove the solenoid, check for debris in the valve spool, and replace the solenoid if it is sticking or burnt out.
Rebuild the PTO Clutch
If the solenoid is working and hydraulic pressure is within spec (or if pressure is bleeding off internally), the PTO clutch pack is damaged. Drain the transmission fluid, remove the rear PTO housing/assembly, disassemble the PTO clutch pack, inspect the friction discs, steel separator plates, and modulator piston seals, and replace all worn components.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reinstall the PTO housing, refill the hydraulic fluid, and clear the fault codes. Run the PTO calibration/sync procedure via the tractor's display monitor to teach the TMF the new engagement parameters.
