Case IH 17517 (DTC F19F) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): SCR Inducement INFO: Inducement Level 1 due to EGR valve blocked activated

Issue description

The engine's Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system has initiated a Level 1 Inducement (engine torque reduction/derate) because it detected that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is blocked or stuck.

Check the cause

  1. Verify fault frequency to see if the code is active or recurring (if it only happens once, no reaction is necessary)

  2. Inspect the EGR valve and connecting pipes visually and physically for heavy soot, carbon buildup, or contamination

  3. Perform an active test (sweep) of the EGR valve actuator using a diagnostic scan tool to check for mechanical binding or lack of response

  4. Check the wiring harness and connectors going to the EGR valve for shorts or damage

  5. If equipped with a pneumatic EGR valve, check for insufficient vacuum or clogged vacuum passages

Repair steps

  1. Identify the Root Cause

    Determine why the valve is blocked. Usually, this is due to excessive carbon buildup from poor combustion, extended idling, or a lack of maintenance.

  2. Dismantle and Clean

    Remove the EGR valve and the connecting exhaust pipes. Clean the passages thoroughly. If the connecting pipes have significant contamination, they must be completely cleaned out or replaced; otherwise, the new valve will fail quickly.

  3. Replace the Valve

    If the valve is mechanically seized, the electronic actuator has failed, or cleaning does not restore free movement, replace the EGR valve assembly.

  4. Install New Gaskets

    Always use brand new gaskets when reinstalling the EGR valve to prevent exhaust leaks.

  5. ECU Synchronization

    Once the new valve is installed, connect your diagnostic equipment and perform an ECU synchronization/relearn procedure so the engine controller can learn the new valve's end-stops.

  6. Test Run

    Start the tractor. Note: It is normal for the vehicle to produce some smoke and soot in the exhaust shortly after installation as the engine adapts to the new valve. Clear the F19F fault code and verify the torque derate is lifted.
