Case IH 17518 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine Degraded State

Fault code 17518 indicates that the engine is in a 'Degraded' state (an emissions-related derate or inducement mode). This occurs when an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve fault or a related emissions system fault has been active and ignored for more than 3.5 hours. To force the operator to repair the emissions system, the system locks into an inducement mode, which limits engine power or restarts.

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to identify the primary active fault code related to the EGR valve or emissions system that triggered the inducement.

   Inspect the EGR valve for heavy carbon buildup, mechanical binding, or failure to actuate.

   Check the wiring harness and connectors going to the EGR valve and related temperature/pressure sensors for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Repair the Primary Fault

   Based on the primary EGR fault code found via the EST, perform the necessary physical repair. This typically involves cleaning the EGR valve, replacing the EGR valve, or repairing damaged wiring.

   Connect the EST

   Once the physical repair is complete, connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine.

   Perform the Reset

   Navigate to the configuration menu in the EST and execute the 'Engine Restart Counter Reset / Unlock Inducement configuration'. Note: The machine will remain in derate until this specific software reset is performed, even if the physical parts are fixed.

   Run Verification Test

   Perform the SCR/EGR Fault Repair Verification Test using the EST to ensure the system recognizes the repair.

   Clear Codes

   Clear all inactive fault codes and return the machine to service.
