Case IH 17518 (DTC F29F) – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): SCR Inducement: Level 3 (creep mode), triggered by EGR valve blocked fault
Issue description
This fault indicates that the engine's Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emissions system has entered a 'Level 3 Inducement' (creep mode), which severely limits engine torque and vehicle speed. This inducement is triggered because the Engine Control Unit has detected that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is blocked, typically due to mechanical blockage (dirt/carbon) or a mismatched EGR valve position sensor.
Applies to these machines
13 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Maxxum
- Puma
- Steiger
- Farmall 105U
- Farmall 115C
- N-Series Loader Backhoes
- Dozers
- Track Loaders
- Skid Steers
- TR270B
- 580N
- 750M
Check the cause
Inspect for mechanical blockage: Check if the EGR valve is mechanically blocked open or closed due to carbon build-up or dirt on the valve seat.
Verify EGR valve position sensor: Check the sensor for a mismatch or drift at the open position.
Check related sensors: Inspect the delta P (differential pressure) sensor and the Venturi tube for damage or contamination, which can falsely trigger EGR flow faults.
Inspect the EGR cooler: Check for clogging or defects, such as coolant water leaks.
Check intake and exhaust systems: Ensure the intake throttle is not blocked in the closed position and that exhaust pressure is not abnormally high.
Repair steps
Removal
Remove the EGR valve from the engine and inspect it visually.
Cleaning vs. Replacement
If the valve is clogged open with carbon and cannot be cleaned, or if it cannot be made to close properly, it must be replaced.
Clear Passages
Inspect the intake manifold passages and ensure they are completely clear of carbon restrictions.
Surface Prep
Ensure both mating surfaces (on the new valve and the engine block) are completely clean and smooth.
Installation
Install the new EGR valve using a new gasket. Note: Gasket sealer is not necessary and should not be used.
Clear Codes
Once repaired, the ECU fault which was the root cause for the inducement must be cleared to exit creep mode.
