17523 (DTC 9E8C)

Case IH 17523 (DTC 9E8C) – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fault path for HC monitoring / Engine driven a long time at idle condition (low temperatures)

Issue description

This is a component protection code for the exhaust aftertreatment system. It triggers when the engine has been idling for an extended period in cold environmental temperatures, causing a large mass of liquid unburnt hydrocarbons (HC / raw fuel) to accumulate in the DOC and DPF. A sudden heavy working load could cause the accumulated fuel to ignite, potentially causing an exhaust fire or completely melting/destroying the aftertreatment system.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Quantum

Check the cause

  1. Verify the tractor's recent operating history for excessive idling in cold weather.

  2. Visually inspect the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) housings for signs of extreme heat (discoloration) or raw fuel/soot soaking at the exhaust tailpipe.

  3. Scan the ECU for related exhaust temperature sensor codes or NOx sensor codes (e.g., A36E / A66E) which might indicate a failed sensor rather than an operational issue.

Repair steps

  1. Do NOT apply heavy load immediately

To prevent an exhaust fire, do not take the tractor straight from a cold idle to a heavy draft load (like deep ripping or heavy PTO work).

  2. Gradual Warm-Up

Warm up the engine and exhaust by driving the tractor under a moderate, gradual load to safely bake off the accumulated hydrocarbons.

  3. Forced Regeneration

If the tractor's display prompts for it, or if you have the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), perform a stationary/manual DPF regeneration. This will safely raise the exhaust temperatures under controlled conditions to burn off the HC mass.

  4. Operator Education

Instruct the operator to avoid extended idling in cold weather. If the tractor is equipped with an Auto-Idle Shutdown feature, ensure it is enabled.

  5. Clear the Code

Once the exhaust system has reached operating temperature and the HC mass is burned off, clear the fault code using the diagnostic tool.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) / Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)

    5801814643

For Quantum series F5DF engines. Only required if the exhaust system caught fire or melted internally.

  • Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensors

Generic fitment based on engine model. Only required if the exhaust system caught fire or melted internally.

  • DPF Filter Gasket / V-Clamps

    2604051C91

For Navistar/Case IH applications. Only required if the exhaust system caught fire or melted internally.
