17539 (F-518164-31) - ECU

Case IH 17539 (F-518164-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): ECM Internal Failure - Injection quantity limited by Level 2 controller check

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an internal processing error or software discrepancy during its Level 2 background security/safety checks. As a protective measure, the ECM limits the fuel injection quantity, which will result in a noticeable engine derate or loss of power.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX

Check the cause

  1. Check for Accompanying Codes: Scan for any other active voltage, power supply, or grounding fault codes. A severe voltage drop or spike can sometimes cause the ECM's internal processor to fail a logic check.

  2. Verify Power and Ground: Inspect the main power and ground harness connections to the ECM. Ensure the battery voltage is stable and the alternator is not overcharging.

  3. Check Software Revision: Determine if the ECM software is out of date. Internal logic errors are frequently resolved by OEM software patches.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Clear and Retest

Clear the fault code and cycle the key. Operate the machine to see if the code returns. If it was a transient software glitch, it may not return.

  3. Reflash the ECM

If the code is hard-set or returns immediately, use the CNH EST to flash the ECM with the latest software calibration file.

  4. Replace the ECM

If the software update fails to clear the code, or if the ECM refuses to take the flash, the internal hardware of the ECM has failed. The ECM must be physically replaced.

  5. Program New ECM

Install the new ECM and use the CNH EST to program the module with the tractor's specific PIN, injector trim codes, and configuration files.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Control Unit (ECU)

    91764687R

Bosch (Model MD1CE101). A replacement ECM is not plug-and-play. It must be programmed by a dealer using the CNH EST tool to match the machine's specific configuration and immobilizer system. Exact part numbers vary slightly by specific engine displacement and emission tier.
