Case IH 17540 (F-518165-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECM Internal Failure - Torque limited by Level 2 controller check to give stable idle speed only

The engine output limit (torque limit) has been applied because the Level 2 controller check has detected a calculation error or a mismatch between requested and actual torque, forcing the machine into a limp mode that only allows a stable idle speed.

   Check for concurrent codes: This code often occurs when an engine output limit is applied due to another failure. Diagnose and resolve any primary codes first.

   Clear the memory: Erase the Level 2/3 error from the fault code memory using an Electronic Service Tool (EST).

   Test drive and operation check: Operate the vehicle for a short distance or run the engine under load to replicate the operation point in which the error entry was originally set.

   Evaluate test drive results

   If the Level 2/3 error does not reappear after clearing the memory and test driving, the error was a temporary software glitch. Do not replace the ECU. The erasure of the fault code memory is sufficient to resolve the issue.

   Replace the ECU

   If the Level 2/3 error does reappear, the internal processor failure is permanent. You must replace the Engine Control Module (ECU).

   Program the new ECU

   After replacing the ECU, the new module will need to be programmed/flashed with the correct dataset and injector coding for your specific machine using the dealer diagnostic tool.
