17542 (F-518162-31) - ECU

Case IH 17542 (F-518162-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU): ECM Internal failure - Injector energizing time fault

Issue description

This fault indicates a hardware or internal processing failure within the control module regarding the fuel injector driver circuits. The module has detected that it can no longer accurately control, measure, or verify the electrical energizing time (pulse width) required to fire the fuel injectors.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 115U
  • MXU series
  • 521F
  • 721F
  • 1021F
  • 1121F
  • 1150K
  • 1650L
  • 580SN
  • 590SN

Check the cause

  1. Check for Active vs. Stored Codes using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  2. Inspect the engine wiring harness from the ECM to the fuel injectors for chafed wires, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.

  3. Verify that the ECM is receiving clean, stable voltage to rule out voltage spikes or severe drops.

  4. Check if there is a software update or re-flash available for the ECM that addresses false internal fault reporting.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the negative battery cable to cut power to the machine.

  2. Locate ECM

Locate the Engine Control Module (typically mounted on the side of the engine block, utilizing vibration isolators).

  3. Disconnect harnesses

Carefully disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECM.

  4. Remove ECM

Unbolt and remove the faulty ECM.

  5. Install replacement ECM

Install the replacement ECM and reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  6. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  7. Program ECM

Connect the Case IH EST. Flash the ECM with the specific software calibration for the machine's Engine Serial Number (ESN) and PIN.

  8. Program injector trim codes

Program the specific injector trim codes (IQA codes) into the new ECM so it knows the exact flow characteristics of the installed injectors.

  9. Verify repair

Clear any residual fault codes and run the engine to verify the repair.
