Case IH 17573 (F-518494-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Corrupted or Invalid CAN Bus Messages (TSC1_PE)

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving corrupted or invalid CAN bus messages from the vehicle/machine controller. Specifically, the error is flagged against the TSC1_PE message (Torque Speed Control message), pointing to a CAN communication failure or data corruption on CAN Bus 2 between the vehicle controller and the engine controller.

   Test CAN Bus 2 functionality using an electronic service tool (EST) to verify if it can transmit or receive messages

   Inspect the physical wiring harness between the vehicle controller and the ECM for chafing, breaks, or shorts

   Check connectors and pins at both the ECM and the vehicle controller for loose connections, corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins

   Verify CAN bus terminating resistors are intact and reading the correct resistance (typically 60 ohms across the bus)

   Scan for related CAN fault codes (such as 17572, 17574, or 17575) that might indicate a broader network corruption issue rather than an isolated module failure

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

   Access the Modules

   Locate the Engine ECU (MD-1) and the main vehicle/machine controller.

   Repair Wiring/Connectors

   If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or corroded pins on CAN Bus 2, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector pins. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure they are securely seated.

   Reconnect and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes.

   Test Operation

   Start the engine and monitor the CAN bus traffic. Verify that the TSC1_PE message is now being received correctly without corruption.

   Module Replacement (If Necessary)

   If the wiring and connections are perfectly intact and the CAN bus is still failing to process the TSC1_PE message, the Engine ECU or the Vehicle Controller may have an internal hardware failure and will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
