17574 (F-518494-11) - ECU

Case IH 17574 (F-518494-11) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): CAN message corruption between vehicle controller and ECM controller - TSC1_PE message

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) received an invalid value or corrupted data packet from the machine/vehicle controller over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. The specific message failing is the TSC1_PE (Torque Speed Control 1).

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50

Check the cause

  1. Check the Diagnostic Connector & CAN Lines: Verify the integrity of the Main CAN Bus (250 kbps). Check Pin C (CAN 1 HI) and Pin D (CAN 1 LO) at the diagnostic connector for proper resistance (typically 60 ohms across the bus with the battery disconnected).

  2. Inspect Harnesses: Visually inspect the wiring harness running between the Vehicle Controller and the ECM for chafing, pinch points, or heat damage.

  3. Check Connectors: Disconnect the harnesses at both the ECM and the Vehicle Controller. Look for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  4. Verify Power and Ground: Ensure both the ECM and Vehicle Controller have clean power and solid grounds to prevent voltage drops that cause dropped CAN packets.

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Test CAN continuity

Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN HI and CAN LO wires directly between the Vehicle Controller and the ECM.

  3. Repair wiring

If resistance is high or there is a short to ground/power, repair or replace the affected section of the CAN bus wiring harness.

  4. Clean connections

Apply a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to the pins of the ECM and Vehicle Controller connectors. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals (not directly on the pins) to prevent moisture ingress.

  5. Reassemble and clear codes

Reconnect the modules and the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 17574 fault code.

  6. Update software or replace module

If the wiring tests perfectly and the code immediately returns upon starting the tractor, check for available software updates for the Vehicle Controller and ECM. If software is up to date, one of the controllers may have a failed internal CAN transceiver and will require replacement.
