Case IH 17578 (F-518256-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine controller received an invalid value from the machine controller for the TSC1_VE message
Issue description
CAN communication error. The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving corrupted data or an implausible value from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM / Machine Controller) regarding the TSC1_VE (Torque/Speed Control) message over the CAN Node A Bus.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying CAN timeout or Bus-off errors (such as 3338, 3339, or 92CB), which indicate a broader CAN communication failure between the VCM and ECM.
Visually inspect the wiring harness connectors at both the ECM and the VCM for moisture, corrosion, bent pins, or backed-out terminals.
Measure the CAN High and CAN Low circuits between the VCM and ECM for continuity, short-to-ground, or short-to-power.
Verify the CAN bus termination resistance with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low).
Ensure both the ECM and VCM are receiving proper operating voltage and have clean ground connections, as low voltage can corrupt CAN messages.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Harness Inspection & Cleaning
Disconnect the main harness connectors at the Engine Control Module and the Machine Controller. Spray the connectors with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are damaged.
Wiring Repair
If the multimeter continuity tests reveal an open circuit or high resistance on the CAN lines between the two modules, locate the chafe point in the wiring harness and repair the wires using OEM-approved splice connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Reassembly & Clearing Codes
Reconnect all modules, reconnect the battery, and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.
Software Flash
If the wiring is perfectly intact and the code returns immediately upon startup, use the EST to check for and apply the latest software calibration updates to both the VCM and the ECM. Software glitches can cause invalid TSC1_VE message generation.
Module Replacement
If wiring is verified good and software updates do not resolve the invalid value transmission, the fault lies internally within the hardware of either the VCM (sending bad data) or the ECM (failing to process it). Replace the faulty controller as dictated by the EST guided diagnostics.
