Issue description

This code is triggered when the engine controller receives an invalid value or loses communication with the machine/vehicle controller over the CAN bus network.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN bus wiring (specifically CAN Node A Bus) between the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) and the Engine Control Unit (ECU) for chafing, open circuits, or short circuits to ground/power.

  2. Verify the integrity of the CAN termination resistors. Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins to ensure it is within specification (typically 60 ohms with the battery disconnected).

  3. Check battery voltage and ground connections to both the ECU and the VCM to rule out voltage drops causing communication dropouts.

  4. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check live parameters, read/clear fault codes, and verify if the ECU is receiving the TSC1_VE message from the vehicle controller.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

    Disconnect the battery negative terminal before performing any electrical repairs or module replacements.

  2. Repair wiring

    If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged CAN bus wiring or corroded connectors between the VCM and ECU, repair or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Test with known good module

    If the wiring is intact but communication fails (or if the internal ECU termination resistor has failed), the issue is likely a defective ECU or VCM. If possible, test with a known good controller to isolate the faulty module.

  4. Replace faulty module

    If the ECU is deemed faulty, remove the defective unit and install the replacement ECU.

  5. Program and calibrate

    After replacing the ECU, connect the CNH EST diagnostic software. You must program the new ECU, configure the vehicle parameters, and write the correct injector codes.

  6. Clear codes and test

    Clear all stored fault codes and perform a test run to ensure the TSC1_VE communication is restored and the tractor operates without entering limp mode.
