Case IH 17580 (F-518255-09) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN communication failure between vehicle controller and ECU controller - TSC1_VE message.

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has failed to receive the expected "TSC1_VE" (Torque Speed Control 1 - Vehicle to Engine) message from the main vehicle controller (VCM/CCM/UCM) over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. This indicates a timeout, signal corruption, or a physical break in the CAN Node A Bus (the main vehicle interface bus).

Check the cause

  1. Check for multiple CAN codes — if the machine was recently flashed, clear the codes and retest. If multiple CAN codes are present, the entire CAN bus circuit must be checked.

  2. Verify battery health and voltage — low voltage during the engine cranking process (dropping below 9-10 volts) can cause the ECU to temporarily lose communication.

  3. Inspect the twisted-pair CAN bus wiring between the Vehicle Controller and the ECU A-095 for chafing, open circuits, short circuits, or damaged connector pins.

  4. Test the CAN termination resistor for the CAN Node A Bus by measuring the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. Wiggle the harness during measurement to reveal any intermittent connection drops.

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

    Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port. Clear the fault codes and cycle the key to see if the 17580 code returns as an active fault.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the resistance test fails or physical damage is found, repair the CAN bus wiring harness or replace the damaged electrical connectors between the vehicle controller and the ECU.

  3. Replace Termination Resistor

    If the CAN termination resistor is burnt out or tests out of specification, replace it.

  4. Software Flash

    If the wiring and resistors are intact, the communication failure may be due to faulty ECU A-095 software. Use the EST to re-flash the ECU with the latest software update.

  5. Replace ECU

    If the ECU A-095 cannot be re-flashed, or if it has suffered an internal powerstage failure preventing CAN communication, the Engine Control Unit must be replaced and programmed to the machine.
