Issue description
The TSC1_VR message is a standard SAE J1939 CAN bus protocol message that stands for 'Torque/Speed Control 1 - Vehicle Retarder' (Engine Brake). This fault code triggers when the Engine Control Module (ECM) receives corrupted data, experiences a timeout, or receives an invalid parameter value from the vehicle/machine controller regarding the engine brake command over the CAN bus network.

Check the cause
Check for broader CAN bus communication faults (e.g., 'CAN A Bus off failure') and resolve global CAN issues first
Verify the tractor/machine battery power supply on the instrument cluster for abnormal voltage spikes (greater than 15V)
Disconnect the vehicle harness from the ECU (e.g., at connector X-911) and verify correct operating voltage with the ignition ON
Inspect the CAN bus pins at both the ECM and the VCU for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture ingress
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool and operate the machine to see if the code returns, as CAN bus errors can sometimes be caused by transient voltage spikes or temporary communication glitches.
Perform Continuity Testing
If the code is hard/active, disconnect the batteries. Disconnect the harness at the ECM and the VCU. Use a multimeter to test the CAN High and CAN Low wires for continuity end-to-end.
Check for Shorts
Test the CAN wires for a short to ground or a short to voltage.
Repair Wiring
If an open circuit, high resistance, or short is found in the CAN bus lines, repair the wiring harness or replace the affected harness section.
Module Replacement
If the wiring harness tests perfectly (proper 120-ohm terminating resistance on the CAN bus, no shorts, good continuity) and the ECU is receiving proper voltage, the fault lies internally. The ECM or VCU will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
