Case IH 17583 (F-518255-11) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Vehicle Controller: CAN message corruption between vehicle controller and ECM controller - TSC1_VR message

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) receives an invalid, corrupted, or timed-out data value from the machine/vehicle controller regarding the engine brake or vehicle retarder command.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related active CAN bus communication faults (e.g., TSC1_PE, TSC1_VE) or engine brake faults (like 17585) to determine if there is a shared wiring problem or central bus failure.

  2. Check ECU supply voltage by disconnecting the vehicle harness from the ECU (e.g., ECU A-095 at connector X-911) and measuring voltage on the harness side with the ignition ON.

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the Vehicle Controller to the ECM for chafed wires, corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion.

  4. Test the CAN bus terminating resistors (should read 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks reveal high resistance, an open circuit, or a short to ground in the CAN wiring between the Vehicle Controller and the ECM, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness. Clean any corroded connector pins with electrical contact cleaner.

  3. Voltage Correction

    If the ECU supply voltage was found to be out of spec during diagnostics, trace the power supply circuit back to the fuse panel/relay and replace any blown fuses or faulty power relays.

  4. Module Replacement

    If the wiring, voltage, and terminating resistors all test perfectly, the internal CAN transceiver in either the ECM or the Vehicle Controller has likely failed. Replace the faulty module.

  5. Reprogramming

    If the ECM or Vehicle Controller is replaced, the new unit must be flashed/programmed by a Case IH dealer using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to match the machine's specific configuration.

  6. Clear and Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and test-drive the machine (specifically engaging the engine brake/retarder) to ensure the TSC1_VR message corruption does not return.
