The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving a continuous, uninterrupted CAN bus signal commanding it to initiate a manual Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration. This indicates a stuck switch, a malfunctioning display sending phantom CAN messages, or a short in the communication network.

   Inspect the physical DPF manual regeneration switch to see if the rocker switch is physically jammed, sticky, or collapsed.

   Clean the AFS Pro or A-pillar display screen thoroughly to ensure dirt or debris isn't causing a phantom touch on the regeneration command soft key.

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), navigate to the Engine/Aftertreatment data list, and monitor the status of the 'Manual Catalyst Management Switch'.

   Perform an isolation test if the EST shows the switch status as constantly 'Active': disconnect the physical DPF switch to see if it changes to 'Inactive' (indicating an internally shorted switch). If it remains 'Active', disconnect the display/cluster. If still active, check for a short-to-power in the CAN bus wiring harness.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Replace the Faulty Component

   If the physical switch failed: Carefully pry the switch bezel from the armrest or side console, disconnect the pigtail connector, and install a new DPF regeneration switch. If the display/cluster failed: Remove the mounting hardware for the A-pillar display or AFS monitor, disconnect the main harness, and install the replacement display (requires programming/calibration via the CNH EST tool). If the wiring failed: Trace the CAN harness from the cab bulkhead to the ECU, locate the chafed wire or melted connector causing the short, and splice in a new repair connector.

   Reconnect all harnesses, reinstall the trim panels, and reconnect the battery.

   Connect the CNH EST tool and clear the inactive 17636 fault code from the ECU memory.

   Turn the key to the ON position and verify that the regeneration icon is not flashing or commanding a start. Run the tractor and ensure the code does not return.
