17637 (F-3251-19) - ECU

Case IH 17637 (F-3251-19) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): Differential pressure sensor: counter for frame receive error above maximum limit

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is failing to receive valid data frames from the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) differential pressure sensor via the SENT (Single Edge Nibble Transmission) communication protocol because the error counter has exceeded its maximum programmed limit.

Check the cause

  1. Check the 3-pin electrical connector at the DPF differential pressure sensor for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture, and trace the wiring harness back to the ECM to ensure the communication lines are not chafed, shorted to ground, or open.

  2. Look for related codes that might point to a definitive sensor failure, such as 17638 (measured data invalid), 17639 (sensor reports internal failure), or 17641 (over voltage error).

  3. Inspect the two pressure hoses connecting the sensor to the DPF to ensure they are not melted, cracked, or clogged with soot.

  4. Verify the tractor's system voltage is healthy, as low voltage is a frequent cause of phantom communication codes on Case IH tractors.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the exhaust system and DPF assembly to cool completely to avoid burns.

  2. Access the Sensor

Open the hood and locate the DPF differential pressure sensor. It is typically mounted on a bracket near the DPF and connected to the exhaust by two hoses.

  3. Disconnect Electrical

Unplug the 3-pin wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Mark the Hoses

Mark the upstream and downstream pressure hoses to ensure they are not swapped during reinstallation.

  5. Remove Hoses

Loosen the hose clamps and carefully pull the hoses off the sensor nipples.

  6. Remove Sensor

Unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket.

  7. Install New Sensor

Bolt the new differential pressure sensor to the bracket.

  8. Reconnect Hoses

Push the pressure hoses onto the correct nipples and secure them tightly with the hose clamps.

  9. Reconnect Electrical

Plug the 3-pin connector back into the sensor.

  10. Clear Codes

Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes. Run the engine and, if necessary, perform a stationary DPF regeneration to verify the sensor is reading correctly and the code does not return.
