Case IH 17646 (F-18-14) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) or SCR Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Maximum rail pressure in limp home mode exceeded limit only

Issue description

The DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) / AdBlue dosing system pressure fails to reduce and exceeds the maximum allowable limit when the emissions system enters a restricted limp home mode or attempts to purge the DEF lines. This indicates a physical restriction in the return circuit, a stuck dosing valve, or a pump failure.

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes (such as 17648, 17649, or 17650) which indicate an electrical issue rather than a physical blockage.

  2. Visually inspect the DEF backflow/return pipe for kinks, crushing, or severe bends that could restrict fluid return to the tank.

  3. Disconnect the return line and check for white, chalky buildup indicating DEF crystallization.

  4. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the DEF rail pressure sensor live data. Command a system purge/revert cycle and observe if the pressure drops.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Ensure the machine is off and the DEF system has completed its automatic purge cycle (wait at least 5-10 minutes after key-off) before disconnecting any lines.

  2. Clear the Backflow Circuit

    Disconnect the DEF backflow pipe from the dosing valve and the tank. Blow low-pressure compressed air or flush with warm distilled water to clear any crystallized DEF blockages.

  3. Inspect the Dosing Valve

    If the lines are clear, remove the DEF dosing valve (injector) from the exhaust stream. Check the nozzle and internal return port for severe crystallization or mechanical binding. Clean with warm distilled water.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

    If the dosing valve is mechanically stuck closed or the internal ECM driver has failed (as indicated by companion codes), replace the dosing valve. If the return line is permanently restricted/kinked, replace the line.

  5. Reassemble and Test

    Reconnect all lines and harnesses. Use the CNH EST to clear the fault codes. Run a forced SCR system test or stationary regeneration to verify that the DEF rail pressure now operates within normal limits during dosing and purging.
