Case IH 17651 (F-5394-04) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): DEF/AdBlue dosing valve ECM driver shorted between the high side and low side drivers
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a direct short circuit between the power supply (high side) and the ground/return path (low side) on the circuit responsible for actuating the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) dosing valve. Because the electrical current is bypassing the valve's internal coil, the ECM disables the circuit to protect its internal drivers, preventing the system from injecting DEF into the exhaust stream.

Check the cause
Trace the wiring harness from the DEF dosing valve back to the ECM. Look for chafed wire insulation, melted conduits near the exhaust, or pinched wires that could cause the high and low side wires to touch.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the DEF dosing valve. Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins on the valve itself. If there is continuity (zero or near-zero ohms), the valve is internally shorted.
Inspect the ECM harness connectors (specifically pins 5.07 and 6.41 on MD1CE101 systems) for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the circuits.
Connect a compatible diagnostic scan tool and run the 'AdBlue Dosing Valve Solenoid test' or 'Urea Dosing Valve Check' to monitor circuit integrity and verify if the short is active or intermittent.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Resolve the Short Circuit
If the harness is damaged: Repair the wiring using OEM-approved splicing techniques, or replace the affected section of the DEF system harness. If the valve is internally shorted: Proceed to replace the DEF dosing valve.
Remove the Faulty Valve
Disconnect the DEF fluid supply line and the electrical connector from the dosing valve. Remove the V-band clamp or mounting bolts securing the valve to the SCR decomposition tube.
Install the New Valve
Clean the mounting surface on the exhaust tube. Install the new DEF dosing valve, torque the clamp/bolts to OEM specifications, and reconnect the fluid line and electrical connector.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 17651 (F-5394-04) fault code.
System Validation
Run a forced DEF dosing test (UDVC/UDST test) via the diagnostic tool to ensure the ECM can successfully command the valve without the driver shorting out.
