Case IH 17663 (F-518261-14) - ECU – ECU: VM2EDC CAN Message Corruption

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is not receiving a valid, expected VM2EDC message from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) over the CAN bus network. This indicates a CAN communication error, timeout, or message corruption between the vehicle controller and the ECU.

   Check CAN line wiring between the Vehicle Controller and the ECU for chafing, breaks, or shorts to ground

   Inspect CAN connections for defective, loose, or corroded pins at the connectors for both the ECU and the Vehicle Controller

   Measure the CAN bus terminating resistance to ensure it is suitable (typically 60 ohms across the CAN High and CAN Low pins when the battery is disconnected)

   Verify the CAN configuration is correct and that no modules have lost their programming

   Verify that the Vehicle Control Module and Engine Control Module are powering up correctly and have good ground connections

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect battery power before beginning electrical repairs.

   Isolate CAN circuit

   Isolate the CAN bus circuit between the Vehicle Controller and the ECU.

   Repair wiring and connectors

   Repair any damaged wiring or replace corroded connector pins found during the diagnostic phase.

   If the wiring harness, connectors, and terminating resistors test perfectly, the fault lies internally within either the Vehicle Controller or the ECU. The respective module must be flashed/reprogrammed or replaced.

   Reconnect battery power, clear the fault codes, and cycle the key to verify if the VM2EDC message timeout returns.
