Case IH 17664 (F-5310-00) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: HC accumulated in the exhaust reached first warning limit
Issue description
Unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) have accumulated in the exhaust aftertreatment system (specifically the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst [DOC] or Diesel Particulate Filter [DPF]) and have reached the first warning threshold. This condition is typically caused by the engine being operated for extended periods at idle or under very light loads, which results in low exhaust temperatures.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Farmall 40
- Farmall 45
- Farmall 50 CVT
- Farmall 115U
- Maxxum
- Puma
- 5140 Combine
Check the cause
Review operating history to determine if the machine has been idling for long periods or operating in cold conditions under light loads
Check for subsequent warning limit codes (e.g., 17665) or exhaust temperature sensor plausibility faults
Verify Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor plausibility by comparing readings with the coolant temperature after a 10-hour standstill
Ensure the particulate filter regeneration inhibition switch is not stuck in the pressed position
Repair steps
Warm Up the Engine
Operate the tractor at working RPMs under a heavy load (e.g., PTO work or heavy pulling) to naturally raise the exhaust gas temperatures.
Allow Regeneration
Once the exhaust reaches the required light-off temperature, continue operating under load until the DOC/DPF oxidizes the accumulated hydrocarbons and the ECM clears the warning limit.
Perform a Forced Regeneration
If driving under load is not possible or does not clear the code, use the Case IH diagnostic tool to initiate a stationary/forced DPF regeneration.
Inspect Sensors
If the system refuses to regenerate, inspect the EGT sensors and their wiring harnesses for corrosion, shorts, or damage. Replace any faulty sensors.
Clean or Replace DPF/DOC
If the hydrocarbons have face-plugged the DOC/DPF to the point where regeneration is impossible, remove the exhaust aftertreatment assembly and send it for professional cleaning or replace it.
