Case IH 17678 (F-519847-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU) / Bosch MD1CE101: Torque limitation due to rail temperature or pressure only
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine control system has detected an abnormal condition regarding the fuel rail pressure or fuel temperature. To protect the engine and fuel system components from damage, the system actively enforces a severe torque limitation (engine derate).
Applies to these machines
4 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Farmall 40, 45, and 50 Tractors (with Cab and CVT Transmission)
- Case IH Farmall 115U Efficient Power Tractors
- Other Case IH / CNH Industrial machines utilizing Stage V MR (Medium Range) engines
Check the cause
Diagnostic Tool Verification: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor live data for both fuel rail pressure and fuel temperature. Compare the 'actual' rail pressure against the 'desired/setpoint' rail pressure under load.
Fuel Supply & Filters: Check the low-pressure fuel supply system. Ensure the fuel supply pressure between the fuel filter and the inlet to the high-pressure pump is at least 5 bar (72 psi). Inspect fuel filters for clogging, restriction, or water contamination.
Wiring and Connectors: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and the Fuel Temperature Sensor. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins at the sensor connectors and the ECM pins.
Pressure Relief Valve (PRV): Check the mechanical fuel pressure relief valve on the common rail. If the valve has been forced open (popped) due to a previous overpressure event, it may be leaking fuel back to the return line, preventing the rail from building adequate pressure.
Fuel Metering Unit (M-Prop): Test the fuel metering valve on the high-pressure pump to ensure it is actuating properly and not sticking.
Repair steps
Address Fuel Supply
If low-pressure supply tests fail, replace the primary and secondary fuel filters. Bleed the fuel system completely of air and retest the machine.
Test/Replace Sensors
If the EST shows implausible readings (e.g., rail pressure reading high when the engine is off, or temperature reading out of physical bounds), replace the faulty Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor or Fuel Temperature Sensor.
Repair Harness
If sensor readings drop out when wiggling the harness, repair the damaged section of the engine wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail.
Address High-Pressure Leaks
If the rail pressure is too low and the supply pump is fine, perform a leak-off test on the fuel injectors and check the PRV. Replace the PRV or leaking injectors as necessary.
Clear and Verify
Once the faulty component is replaced, use the diagnostic tool to clear the 17678 (F-519847-31) fault code. Test drive the tractor under a working load to verify that the torque limitation has been lifted and rail pressure tracks the commanded setpoint.
