Case IH 17681 (F-3364-06) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM): DEF/AdBlue quality sensor failure - quality signal shorted to battery

The control system is detecting an abnormally high voltage on the DEF quality sensor's signal circuit, indicating a short circuit to the battery voltage.

   Verify that the tractor's battery voltage is within the normal operating range. Low or erratic battery voltage is a leading cause of misdiagnosed electrical and DEF fault codes.

   Check the wiring harness leading to the DEF quality sensor for any disconnections, chafing, or visible short-circuits to power.

   Ensure the DEF fluid is not contaminated. Inadequate quality fuel or contamination can cause chemical reactions that damage the sending unit sensor.

   Clear all past Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) using a diagnostic tool, run the machine to form the DTC detection conditions, and check if the code returns.

   Preparation

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical sparks or further shorts.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the DEF tank. The DEF quality sensor is typically part of the DEF Head Unit or sending unit flange assembly mounted directly on or inside the DEF tank.

   Access the Unit

   Depending on the machine model, you may need to drop the DEF tank or simply remove the top flange assembly to access the sensor.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical harness connector from the DEF sending unit.

   Removal

   Unbolt and carefully remove the faulty DEF Head Unit/Sensor assembly from the tank.

   Installation

   Install the new or remanufactured DEF quality sensor assembly into the tank, ensuring all seals and O-rings are properly seated to prevent leaks.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor. If the tank was dropped, reinstall and secure it.

   Refill

   Dump any old or potentially contaminated DEF and refill the tank with fresh, clean Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

   Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes with a diagnostic tool, and run the equipment to verify the repair.
