Case IH 17687 (F-518401-04) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): ECM 12/24 volt actuator supply 7 is shorted to battery voltage (Supply 7 = MD1CE101 pins 1.06, 1.09)

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the electrical circuit for "actuator supply 7" is receiving full battery voltage inappropriately. This supply circuit is routed out of the ECU via pins 1.06 and 1.09. A short to battery voltage typically occurs when a wire's insulation chafes and touches a live power wire, or when a connected actuator/sensor fails internally and bridges the power circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Pinpoint the Circuit: Locate the main engine wiring harness connector at the Bosch MD1CE101 ECU. Identify pins 1.06 and 1.09, which correspond to actuator supply 7.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading away from pins 1.06 and 1.09 for signs of chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points where the wire might be shorting against a 12V/24V battery source.

  3. Component Isolation: Disconnect the actuators and sensors powered by supply 7 one at a time. Use a multimeter to check if the short to battery voltage clears when a specific component is unplugged. If it clears, that specific component is internally shorted.

  4. ECU Connector Check: Inspect the ECU connector for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging a battery supply pin directly to pins 1.06 or 1.09.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the ECU or engine wiring harness to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Isolate the Short

    Using a digital multimeter, test the continuity between pins 1.06/1.09 on the harness side and the battery positive terminal.

  3. Repair the Harness

    If the short is located within the wiring harness, open the loom, locate the compromised wire, cut out the damaged section, and solder/heat-shrink a new section of wire. Re-loom and secure the harness away from vibration points.

  4. Replace Faulty Actuator

    If the diagnostic checks revealed that an actuator or sensor is internally shorted to battery voltage, replace the faulty component.

  5. ECU Replacement (Worst Case)

    If the wiring harness and all connected components test perfectly fine, the Bosch MD1CE101 ECU may have suffered an internal hardware failure on supply 7. The ECU will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes and verify the repair.
