Case IH 17688 (F-518410-04) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECM 12/24 volt actuator supply 10 is shorted to battery voltage.

Issue description

The Engine Control Module has detected that the voltage on the actuator supply circuit 10 is abnormally high, matching battery voltage (12V or 24V depending on the system). This specific supply circuit is routed through pin 1.13 on the engine ECU connector. A short to battery voltage usually means a wire has rubbed against a live power wire, or an actuator has failed internally and is bleeding power back into the supply line.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness leading from the ECU to the engine actuators for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points where the wire from pin 1.13 could be touching a constant 12V/24V power source.

  2. Disconnect the engine harness at the MD1CE101 ECU and inspect the pins (specifically around pin 1.13) for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging a power pin to the supply 10 pin.

  3. With the ECU disconnected and the key ON, use a multimeter to measure voltage at the harness side of pin 1.13. If battery voltage is present, there is a short to power in the wiring harness.

  4. Disconnect the actuator(s) powered by supply 10. If the voltage on the wire drops to zero, the actuator itself is internally shorted to power.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine's ignition and engage the main battery disconnect switch.

    Ensure the machine is powered down before beginning electrical work.

  2. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the Bosch MD1CE101 ECU.

    Prepare the harness for tracing and testing.

  3. Trace the wire originating from pin 1.13 to its respective actuator.

    Follow the wire path to locate any potential shorts or damage.

  4. Repair or replace the engine harness if damaged.

    If the harness is damaged: Repair the shorted section of the wire by splicing in new wire with weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, or replace the affected engine harness section entirely.

  5. Replace the faulty actuator if it is bleeding voltage.

    If the actuator is faulty: Replace the actuator that is bleeding battery voltage back into the supply 10 circuit.

  6. Replace and program the ECU if it has an internal hardware failure.

    If the ECU is faulty: If the harness and actuators test perfectly fine, the MD1CE101 ECU may have suffered an internal hardware failure on the supply 10 driver. The ECU will need to be replaced and flashed with the correct machine software.

  7. Reconnect all harness connectors securely.

    Ensure all connections are tight and properly seated.

  8. Turn on the battery disconnect, clear inactive fault codes, and run the engine.

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear codes and verify the code does not return.
