17690 (F-518411-04) - ECU

Case IH 17690 (F-518411-04) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM 12/24 volt actuator supply 10 is shorted to ground.

Issue description

The Engine Control Module has detected that the voltage on the specific circuit designated as 'Actuator Supply 10' has dropped to zero due to a direct short to the chassis ground.

Applies to these machines

  • Axial-Flow 5140
  • Axial-Flow 6140
  • Axial-Flow 7140
  • Axial-Flow 9240
  • Axial-Flow 9250
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380 CVX
  • Optum 250 CVX
  • Optum 300
  • Maxxum 115

  • Farmlift 737

Check the cause

  1. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery to ensure the machine is powered down and prevent accidental shorts during testing.

  2. Locate the Bosch MD1CE101 ECM on the engine block and disconnect the main wiring harness connector.

  3. Locate pin 1.13 on the harness side of the ECM connector.

  4. Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance (ohms) between pin 1.13 on the harness and a known good chassis ground. Low resistance confirms a short to ground.

  5. Disconnect the actuators powered by this circuit one by one (such as SCR/DEF system heaters, dosing modules, or fuel filter heating elements).

  6. Re-test the circuit with the multimeter. If the short to ground disappears when a specific actuator is unplugged, that actuator has failed internally. If the short remains with all actuators unplugged, the wiring harness itself is chafed.

Repair steps

  1. Harness Repair

Trace the wire from pin 1.13 along the engine block. Inspect areas where the loom routes near sharp metal brackets, moving parts, or high-heat areas (like the exhaust/SCR system). If a chafed wire is found, cut out the damaged section, splice in a new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-wrap the loom with high-temp friction tape.

  2. Actuator Replacement

If the diagnostic checks proved an actuator was internally shorted to ground, unbolt and replace the faulty component.

  3. Connector Repair

Inspect the ECM connector itself. If pin 1.13 is melted, corroded, or damaged, you will need to repin the connector using an OEM terminal repair kit.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect the ECM and all actuators. Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition ON and use a diagnostic scan tool (such as Case IH EST) to clear fault code 17690. Start the engine and verify the code does not return.
