Case IH 177-15 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle Control Module / Engine Control Module (ECM): Transmission oil temperature sensor data valid, above normal range - least severe

Transmission fluid over-temperature condition. The sensor is reading correctly (data valid), but the temperature of the transmission oil has exceeded the programmed normal operating threshold for a specified delay time.

   Check Transmission Oil Level: Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct level. Low fluid can cause rapid overheating.

   Inspect the Transmission Oil Cooler: Check for a transmission oil cooler blocked with dust, dirt, or chaff.

   Evaluate Operating Conditions: Determine if the machine has been performing sustained heavy draft work in high ambient temperatures.

   Inspect Sensor Wiring: Check the wiring harness and connector at the transmission oil temperature sensor for fraying, melting, or corrosion.

   Cool Down & Clean

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the transmission to cool. Thoroughly blow out or wash the transmission oil cooler and radiator package to restore proper airflow.

   Correct Fluid Levels

   Check the transmission dipstick or sight glass. Top off the transmission fluid with the OEM-specified hydraulic/transmission oil if it is low.

   Clear and Retest

   Clear the fault code and operate the tractor under normal load. If the code does not return, the issue was environmental/maintenance-related (blocked cooler).

   Test the Sensor

   If the code returns immediately when the tractor is cold, the sensor itself has likely failed internally. Disconnect the sensor harness and test the sensor's resistance with a multimeter against OEM specs.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the sensor is faulty, place a catch pan underneath the sensor port. Unscrew the old transmission oil temperature sensor.

   Install New Sensor

   Thread the new sensor into the transmission housing (e.g., 3/8"-18 thread) and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

   Finalize

   Reconnect the wiring harness, top off any fluid lost during the swap, and clear the fault codes.
