Case IH 17706 (F-518254-11) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): CAN message corruption between vehicle controller and ECU controller - TSC1_VE message

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is either receiving an invalid value, experiencing a timeout, or detecting data corruption from the machine's Vehicle Control Module (VCM / Cab Controller) regarding the TSC1_VE (Torque/Speed Control 1 - Vehicle) CAN message.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Active Status: Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the machine's display to verify if the fault code is currently active or stored in history.

  2. Software Check: Check the Engine ECU for the appropriate software version. Re-flash the ECU if a software update is available to resolve known CAN communication bugs.

  3. CAN Bus Resistance Test: Measure the termination resistance of the CAN Node A Bus. If the measured resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low circuits is not correct (typically 60 ohms for a healthy network), check for grounded conductors or open circuits.

  4. Visual Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the relevant wiring harnesses and connectors between the VCM and the ECU (e.g., connector X-9001). Look for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires.

  5. Flex Test: Flex the involved harnesses while monitoring the display to reveal intermittent breaks or shorts in the wiring.

  6. Power Supply Check: Verify that the ECU is receiving proper supply voltage and ground. A dropping voltage can cause the ECU to temporarily lose CAN communication.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Modules

    Locate the Engine Control Unit (ECU) on the engine block and the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) typically located in the cab or under the console.

  3. Inspect and Clean Connectors

    Disconnect the main harness connectors at both the ECU and the VCM. Inspect the pins for corrosion or pushed-back terminals. Clean the contacts with a dedicated electrical contact cleaner and allow them to dry.

  4. Perform Continuity Testing

    Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires end-to-end between the VCM and the ECU.

  5. Test for Shorts

    Test the CAN wires for a short to ground (chassis) or a short to voltage.

  6. Repair Wiring

    If an open circuit, high resistance, or short is found, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the affected harness segment.

  7. Reassemble

    Reconnect all harness connectors, ensuring the locking mechanisms are fully seated.

  8. Restore Power and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or in-cab display to clear the fault code.

  9. Operational Test

    Operate the machine under normal conditions to verify that the TSC1_VE CAN message corruption code does not return. If the wiring is flawless and the code persists, the ECU or VCM may have an internal CAN transceiver failure and will require replacement. Note: Replacement ECUs must be programmed/flashed by a dealer with the specific machine's software upon installation.
