Case IH 17728 (F-2797-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Internal ECU Failure

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit has detected an internal hardware or software fault related to its boost capacitor circuit. If the capacitor cannot maintain the required electrical load balance, the ECU limits the number of fuel injections to protect the circuit, which typically results in engine derate, misfires, or a complete shutdown.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery and ground circuits to ensure proper ECU power supply, as a weak battery, faulty alternator, or poor ground can prevent the boost capacitor from charging properly

  2. Inspect the engine wiring harness and injector harness (Bank 1 and Bank 2) for short circuits, oil intrusion, water ingress, or chafed wires that could overload the ECU's boost capacitor

  3. Measure the resistance of all fuel injectors to check for a shorted injector coil, which will draw excessive current and can permanently damage the ECU

  4. Check for available software updates (dataset flash) via the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to resolve potential load balance logic errors

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable(s) to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Remove the ECU

    Locate the Engine ECU (typically mounted on the side of the engine block with vibration isolators). Disconnect the large multi-pin harness connectors. Remove the mounting bolts and extract the module.

  3. Install Replacement ECU

    Mount the new or remanufactured ECU to the engine block. Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated.

  4. Program the ECU

    Connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) laptop to the machine's diagnostic port. Flash the ECU with the correct engine software/dataset matching the machine's serial number.

  5. Code the Injectors

    Using the EST, input the specific trim codes (IQA codes) for each fuel injector into the new ECU so it can balance fuel delivery correctly.

  6. Final Testing

    Reconnect the battery, clear any stored fault codes, and test run the engine under load to verify the repair.
