17737 (F-152-31) - ECU

Case IH 17737 (F-152-31) - ECU – Engine ECU: ECU internal failure - External device triggered an ECU reset during normal ECU driving

Issue description

While the engine was running, an external component connected to the ECU (such as a sensor, actuator, or a device on the CAN bus using the IO external library) experienced a severe electrical fault—like a dead short to ground or a voltage spike. To protect its internal circuitry from permanent damage, the ECU was forced to reboot/reset itself.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Austoft 9000 series Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Austoft 9900 series Sugarcane Harvesters

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying fault codes (e.g., shorted 5V reference sensor, failed DEF/AdBlue component, or short-circuited fuel injector) that often log right before the reset occurs

  2. Inspect connected external devices utilizing the IO external library

  3. Check power supply and grounds, including the battery, alternator output, and main power/ground supply lines to the ECU for sudden voltage drops or loose grounds

  4. Perform a harness isolation test by visually inspecting the engine wiring harness for chafing or melted wires, and disconnect external sensors/devices one by one to see if the reset condition stops

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery before performing electrical repairs to prevent further module damage.

  2. Repair External Shorts

If a specific sensor or wiring short was identified during the diagnostic phase (e.g., a rubbed wire on the engine block), repair the damaged wiring harness or replace the shorted sensor.

  3. Clean Connections

Clean and tighten all ECU ground and power supply connections, ensuring the alternator is charging correctly.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery and clear the fault codes using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  5. Test Run

Operate the machine under normal driving conditions to verify if the code returns.

  6. Replace the ECU

If the wiring and all external devices test perfectly fine, but the F-152-31 code persists and the ECU continues to reset internally, the Engine ECU has suffered an unrecoverable internal hardware failure and must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
