Case IH 17738 (F-152-11) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Internal ECU failure - Error in the real-time clock counter
Issue description
The ECU's internal processor has lost track of its real-time clock, often due to a sudden loss of power, a failing internal battery/capacitor, or memory corruption.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Austoft 9900 Sugarcane Harvesters
- Case IH Farmall series (e.g., 40, 45, 50, 115U)
- Case IH Puma series tractors
- Case IH Steiger series tractors
Check the cause
Verify the battery disconnect switch is not being used inappropriately before the machine is properly shut down
Check main battery voltage and inspect or clean the main ECU power and ground terminals
Disconnect any aftermarket monitors, GPS units, or third-party CAN-bus devices to isolate external interference
Inspect the main engine wiring harness for chafing or shorts to ground
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Clear the inactive fault codes. Cycle the ignition key off, wait for the ECU to power down completely, and turn it back on. If the code does not return, it was likely a transient voltage drop or improper battery disconnect event.
Remove Interference
If the code is active, physically unplug non-essential external sensors and aftermarket devices one by one, cycling the key each time to see if the ECU initializes normally without triggering the reset code.
Software Flash
If the code persists (especially the 17738 real-time clock error), the ECU's non-volatile memory may be corrupted. Have a Case IH dealer attempt to re-flash the ECU with the latest firmware.
Replace ECU
If the ECU cannot be re-flashed, or if the internal hardware (like the clock counter) has permanently failed, the Engine Control Unit must be replaced and programmed to the machine.
Parts you might need
(1)Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Control Module (ECM)
Must be ordered specific to the machine's Engine Serial Number (ESN) and requires dealer programming (EST tool) to flash the correct fuel maps and machine configuration files.
