17740 (F-628-31) - ECU

Case IH 17740 (F-628-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - read access to non volatile memory failed for at least one block.

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has suffered an internal hardware or software corruption issue. Specifically, the module is unable to retrieve stored data (such as engine calibrations, operating parameters, or historical data) from its internal EEPROM or Flash memory.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Magnum series
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac series
  • Case IH Austoft sugarcane harvesters
  • Case IH Farmall series
  • Case IH Puma series

Check the cause

  1. Check Power and Ground: Verify the battery voltage and inspect the ground connections to the ECU. Voltage spikes, low voltage, or a battery disconnect switch being inappropriately disconnected while the ECU is powered can trigger memory read/write errors.

  2. Cycle Power: Attempt to clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool, cycle the ignition key, and see if the code returns as an active fault.

  3. Software Reflash: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Attempt to reflash or update the ECU software. If the memory block is permanently corrupted or physically damaged, the reflash will fail, confirming the ECU must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the machine's battery power to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the ECU

Locate the Engine ECU, which is typically mounted on the side of the engine block or in a designated electronics bay depending on the machine model.

  3. Disconnect Harnesses

Carefully release the locking tabs and disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECU.

  4. Remove the ECU

Remove the mounting bolts and hardware securing the ECU to its bracket, then remove the faulty unit.

  5. Install the New ECU

Mount the replacement ECU and secure it with the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect Harnesses

Reconnect the wiring harness connectors, ensuring the locking mechanisms click securely into place.

  7. Restore Power

    Reconnect the battery.

  8. Program the ECU

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). A blank or replacement ECU must be programmed/flashed with the specific software, VIN, and engine calibration files for your exact machine model before it will start. Alternatively, utilize an ECU cloning service to transfer data from the old unit.
