Case IH 17741 (F-628-14) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - write access to non volatile memory failed for at least one block

Issue description

The engine's computer has suffered an internal hardware or software fault where it can no longer save data to its internal EEPROM or Flash memory. Because it cannot write to this non-volatile memory, the module cannot permanently store operational data, adaptations, or newly logged fault codes.

Check the cause

  1. Check Battery Disconnect Procedures: Ensure operators are allowing the ECU to power down completely before throwing the master kill switch, as inappropriate disconnects cause memory corruption.

  2. Check Power and Ground: Verify that the ECU is receiving stable voltage. Voltage spikes or drops can interrupt memory write cycles.

  3. Attempt a Code Clear: Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the code and cycle the key. If the code immediately returns, the memory block is permanently damaged.

  4. Software Update / Reflash: Check if there is a software update available for the ECU. Reflashing the module can sometimes bypass corrupted memory sectors or resolve software-level glitches.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

    Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool and download any retrievable engine data, injector trim codes, and machine configurations.

  2. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the machine's negative battery cable.

  3. Locate ECU

    Locate the Engine ECU (typically mounted directly to the side of the FPT engine block, cooled by fuel lines in some configurations).

  4. Disconnect harnesses

    Carefully disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECU.

  5. Remove ECU

    Remove the mounting bolts and remove the failed ECU.

  6. Install replacement ECU

    Install the replacement ECU and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.

  7. Reconnect harnesses and battery

    Reconnect the wiring harnesses and the battery.

  8. Flash ECU

    Connect the CNH EST tool and flash the blank replacement ECU with the correct software calibration for your specific machine and Engine Serial Number (ESN).

  9. Write trim codes and calibrate

    Write the injector trim codes (IMA codes) to the new ECU and perform any required throttle or sensor calibrations.
