Case IH 17744 (F-518201-11) - ECU – ECU: ECU Irregular Power Down Detected

When the ignition key is turned off, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) does not shut down immediately. It relies on a constant, unswitched battery power supply to stay awake for a brief period to perform a controlled shutdown sequence, save operating data, and manage the DEF purge cycle. This fault code is triggered when the ECU loses its constant power or ground unexpectedly before the shutdown sequence is completed. It is most often caused by an external power supply issue, such as a failing relay or bad ground, rather than an internal ECU failure.

   Test battery voltage and inspect terminals for loose connections or heavy corrosion that could cause a sudden voltage drop.

   Verify the main ground strap from the ECU to the chassis/battery is clean, tight, and free of paint or rust.

   Check the unswitched power circuits (inline fuses and wiring) running directly from the battery to the ECU.

   Test the main ECU power relay (clean power relay) for sticking or dropping out too early.

   Ensure the ignition key switch is not intermittently cutting power or sending erratic signals to the ECU.

   Power Down

   Turn off the ignition and wait at least 2 to 3 minutes for the system to attempt a complete power down. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Clean Connections

   Remove, wire-brush, and re-tighten the battery terminals and the main ECU ground connections on the chassis.

   Replace the Main Relay

   Locate the ECU main power relay in the power distribution box. Replace it with a new OEM relay rather than just testing it, as relays can fail intermittently when hot.

   Harness Inspection

   Visually inspect the wiring harness from the battery/fuse box to the ECU. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or moisture ingress in the ECU connectors.

   Reconnect and Clear

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port and clear the inactive fault codes.

   Verification

   Start the engine, let it run for a minute, and turn the key off. Wait 60 seconds for the ECU to perform its normal shutdown sequence. Turn the key back on and verify that code 17744 has not returned.

   ECU Replacement

   If the wiring, grounds, and relays are confirmed perfect but the code persists and causes operational issues, the ECU has suffered a genuine internal hardware failure and must be replaced and programmed by a Case IH dealer.
