Case IH 17756 (F-3512-12) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM 5 volt sensor supply 4 out of range failure

The 5-volt reference voltage generated by the Engine Control Module (ECM) for 'Sensor Supply Circuit 4' is operating outside of its expected parameters. The voltage is either too high (short to power), too low (short to ground/undervoltage), or erratic. When this supply circuit fails, any sensor relying on it will lose its reference voltage, causing the ECM to receive invalid data.

   Check the machine's base battery voltage to ensure it is sufficient, as low system voltage can trigger ECM power stage undervoltage faults.

   Disconnect the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (and any other sensors on Supply 4) and measure the voltage at the ECM supply pin. If the 5V reference returns to normal (approx. 4.8V - 5.2V), the sensor is internally shorted.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the ECM and the sensor for chafing, bare wires touching the chassis (short to ground), or wires touching a 12V source (short to power).

   Inspect the ECM connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the 5V supply to an adjacent pin.

   Power Down

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Harness

   Locate the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor and trace its wiring harness back to the ECM.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wire and solder/heat-shrink a new section, or replace the affected harness pigtail.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the sensor was found to be pulling the 5V circuit down, unbolt the faulty accelerator pedal position sensor and install the replacement part.

   ECM Replacement

   If the wiring is perfectly intact and the sensors are not shorted, but the ECM still fails to output 5 Volts on Supply 4, the ECM's internal power stage has failed. The ECM will need to be replaced and flashed with the correct software by a dealer.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 17756 fault code. Test the accelerator pedal operation to ensure engine RPM responds correctly.
