Case IH 17757 (F-3513-12) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM 5 volt sensor supply 5 out of range failure
Issue description
This indicates that the 5-volt reference circuit #5—which provides operating power to a specific group of engine sensors—is operating outside of its expected voltage parameters due to an electrical failure in the connected sensors, a defect in the wiring harness, excessive battery voltage, or an internal failure of the ECM's Power Stage 5.

Check the cause
Check main battery voltage to verify it is within normal operating limits, as excessive system voltage can trigger ECM power stage errors.
Consult the specific engine wiring diagram to identify which sensors are powered by 5 Volt Sensor Supply 5 (often includes Intake Manifold Pressure/Temperature or Fuel Rail Pressure sensors).
Perform a sensor isolation test by disconnecting the sensors on this 5-volt circuit one at a time. If the 5-volt reference returns to normal (approx. 4.75V - 5.25V) at the harness after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.
If the voltage remains out of range with all sensors disconnected, test the wiring harness for a short to ground or a short to battery voltage.
Test the 5-volt output directly at the ECM pins with the harness disconnected. If the ECM still does not output the correct 5 volts on circuit 5, the ECM has suffered an internal hardware failure.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the sensors on the 5V Supply 5 circuit. Look for chafed wires rubbing against the engine block, melted insulation, or water/debris intrusion in the connectors.
Repair Harness or Replace Sensors
Repair any damaged wiring or replace affected connector pigtails. Replace any sensor identified during the isolation test as internally shorted.
Replace the ECM
If internal failure is confirmed via the ECM pin output test, disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECM. Unbolt the ECM from its mounting bracket on the engine block and install the new or remanufactured ECM.
Reprogram ECM
Flash and program the new ECM with the correct software file for the specific tractor model and engine serial number using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Verify Repair
Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes, and run the engine to verify the 5-volt supply remains stable and the code does not return.
