17762 (F-518145-04) - ECU

Case IH 17762 (F-518145-04) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Internal ECU failure - ECU internal temperature sensor: short to ground

Issue description

The engine monitoring system has detected a hardware failure inside the control unit. Specifically, the internal temperature sensor's voltage is reading a short circuit to ground. Because this sensor is built directly into the module's internal circuitry, it indicates a fatal hardware defect within the unit itself. When this code is active, engine functions dependent on ECU temperature readings are disabled, and a warning lamp is illuminated.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fault code is currently active in the system.

  2. Check the ECU operation by connecting a known-good, compatible test ECU (if available).

  3. If the fault code is no longer active with the replacement ECU connected, the original ECU is confirmed to have an internal hardware defect.

  4. Note: The internal temperature sensor cannot be serviced or replaced independently. If the sensor is defective, the entire ECU must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine's master power switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Remove the Defective ECU

Locate the Engine Control Unit on the engine block or firewall. Carefully release the locking levers on the ECU wiring harness connectors and unplug them. Unbolt the ECU from its mounting bracket.

  3. Install the Replacement ECU

Mount the new or remanufactured ECU and secure the bolts. Reconnect the wiring harness connectors, ensuring the metallic locking levers are seated in their final locked position.

  4. Restore Power

Reconnect the battery and turn on the master power switch.

  5. Programming

A blank or remanufactured ECU will need to be flashed/programmed with the correct machine dataset and software using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) before the engine will start and operate correctly.
