17763 (F-518146-02) - ECU

Case IH 17763 (F-518146-02) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - ECU Temperature Sensor: Implausible sensor measuring

Issue description

The control module has detected an internal hardware or software anomaly where the temperature reading from its own internal circuit board sensor is out of a plausible or expected range.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Austoft 9900 series
  • Austoft 9000 series
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 115U
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • wheel loaders
  • dozers

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the main wiring harnesses connected to the ECU for a short circuit to an external power source or ground, which can backfeed and trigger internal plausibility faults.

  2. Verify that the ECU is receiving the correct operating voltage to rule out voltage spikes or severe undervoltage causing erratic internal sensor behavior.

  3. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if the ECU dataset is corrupted. Attempt to re-flash or reprogram the ECM with a proper dataset to see if the internal error clears.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off machine

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate ECU

Locate the Engine ECU (typically mounted on the side of the engine block or in a dedicated electronics bay, depending on the machine).

  3. Disconnect wiring

Carefully release the locking levers on the main wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the ECU.

  4. Remove ECU

Unbolt the defective ECU from its mounting bracket and remove it from the machine.

  5. Install ECU

Install the replacement ECU and secure the mounting bolts.

  6. Reconnect wiring

Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated and secure.

  7. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  8. Program ECU

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Flash the ECU with the specific dataset for your machine's PIN/serial number, perform injector coding, and run any necessary calibration routines (such as the Engine Restart Counter Reset).
