Issue description

The engine's control module has detected a critical internal hardware or software malfunction within its own Safety Management Unit. The controller has flagged an internal error (Alarm Group 0, Failure 1 or 11) that prevents it from safely managing engine parameters, which typically results in a derate or engine shutdown to protect the equipment.

Check the cause

  1. Check Power and Ground: Verify that the ECM is receiving clean, stable battery voltage. Inspect the main power relays, fuses, and ground straps connected to the engine block and ECM chassis. Voltage spikes or drops can cause the Safety Management Unit to trigger false internal alarms.

  2. Check CAN Bus Resistance: Measure the CAN network resistance at the diagnostic port or ECM connector. The correct value should be 60 ohms. If the resistance is out of spec, wiring harness issues may be causing data corruption.

  3. Cycle Power and Clear Codes: Perform a hard reset by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes. Reconnect, clear the inactive codes using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), and run the engine to see if the code returns as an active fault.

  4. Check for Software Updates: Connect the EST and check if there is a newer software calibration available for the FPT Cursor 11 ECM. Sometimes, internal safety unit alarms are caused by software bugs that can be resolved with a re-flash.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the master disconnect switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the ECM

    Locate the Engine Control Module mounted on the side of the FPT Cursor 11 engine block.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the ECM to prevent dirt and debris from contaminating the electrical connectors.

  4. Disconnect Harnesses

    Carefully release the locking levers on the main engine wiring harness connectors (e.g., J1/J2 or OEM equivalent) and unplug them from the ECM.

  5. Remove the ECM

    Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECM to the engine block isolation mounts.

  6. Install the New ECM

    Mount the replacement ECM and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

  7. Reconnect Wiring

    Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated and secure.

  8. Program the ECM

    Reconnect the batteries. You must use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the blank/replacement ECM with the correct engine calibration file (dataset) specific to the Austoft 9900's power curve and emissions tier.

  9. Test

    Start the harvester, verify that code 17781 is no longer active, and perform a test run to ensure normal operation.
