17796 (F-520351-11) - ECU

Case IH 17796 (F-520351-11) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): ECM internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 1 Failure 3 issued.

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a critical internal hardware or software malfunction specifically within its internal Safety Management Unit, triggering a Group 1, Failure 3 alarm.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Austoft 9900 and 9000 Series Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Machines utilizing the MTA CCM & APH Stage V MR

Check the cause

  1. Verify Active Status: Use the AFS Pro 700 display or Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm if the code is currently active or stored in history.

  2. Power and Ground Testing: Inspect the main ECM power supply and ground circuits for loose connections, corrosion, or damaged wiring to rule out severe voltage spikes or drops.

  3. Software Verification: Check if there is a software update or recalibration available for the ECM, as software glitches can occasionally cause false Safety Management Unit alarms.

  4. Code Clearing: Clear the fault code and cycle the ignition. If the code returns immediately upon key-on, the ECM has suffered a permanent internal failure and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery (negative cable first) to prevent electrical damage during the procedure.

  2. Locate the ECM

Locate the Engine Control Module mounted on the FPT Cursor 11 engine block.

  3. Disconnect Harnesses

Carefully release the locking mechanisms and disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECM.

  4. Remove the ECM

Unbolt the ECM from its mounting bracket and remove it from the machine.

  5. Install the New ECM

Mount the replacement or remanufactured ECM and secure the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect Wiring

Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the connectors are fully seated and locked.

  7. Restore Power

    Reconnect the battery cables.

  8. Programming/Calibration

A new or remanufactured ECM will be blank or require machine-specific configuration. Use the Case IH EST diagnostic tool to flash the correct software, input the injector trim codes, and calibrate the module to the specific Austoft 9900 / Cursor 11 configuration.

  9. Final Verification

Start the engine, ensure no fault codes return on the AFS Pro 700 display, and verify normal operation.
