17797 (F-520352-31) - ECU

Case IH 17797 (F-520352-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 1 Failure 4 issued.

Issue description

This code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an internal hardware, software, or calibration error within its Safety Management Unit. The system flags this when a Level 1 function behaves similarly to one causing a Level 2 or Level 3 entry due to functional dependencies. Essentially, the ECU's internal self-monitoring has detected a logic or memory fault.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Farmall series (e.g., 40, 45, 50 CVT and Mid-Range models)
  • Case IH Vestrum Series (100, 110, 120, 130)
  • Case IH Luxxum Series (100, 110, 120)
  • Case IH Maxxum series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Optum series
  • Case IH Magnum series

Check the cause

  1. Check for Parallel Errors: Verify if there are any Level 1 errors that may have been entered in parallel, as this procedure is independent of them.

  2. Clear and Retest: Because this can be a transient calibration or logic glitch, erasure of fault code memory may be sufficient. Do not replace ECU immediately.

  3. Voltage/Wiring Check: Ensure that battery voltage is stable and that there are no short circuits to the ECU harness, as severe voltage spikes can cause internal ECU logic faults.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH EST or TEXA IDC5) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Read fault codes

Read and record all active and inactive fault codes.

  3. Erase fault codes

    Erase the fault code memory.

  4. Perform key cycle

Perform a key cycle (turn the machine off, wait for the ECU to power down completely, and turn it back on).

  5. Operate machine

Operate the machine to see if the fault code 17797 (520352-31) returns.

  6. Verify repair completion

If the code does NOT return: The repair is complete. The error was a temporary logic fault.

  7. Determine ECU replacement

If the code DOES return: The ECU has suffered a permanent internal failure and must be replaced.

  8. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the machine's battery.

  9. Remove ECU

Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the Engine Control Module and unbolt the module from its mounting bracket.

  10. Install replacement ECU

Install the replacement ECU and reconnect the harnesses.

  11. Program new ECU

Reconnect the battery and use the OEM diagnostic tool to flash/program the new ECU with the correct software payload for the specific tractor model and engine configuration.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU)

    504122542

A used or new ECU cannot simply be plugged in; it must be programmed/flashed by a dealer or tuning specialist to match the machine's VIN, immobilizer, and emission control (AdBlue/DPF) parameters.

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU)

    Bosch MD1CE101

A used or new ECU cannot simply be plugged in; it must be programmed/flashed by a dealer or tuning specialist to match the machine's VIN, immobilizer, and emission control (AdBlue/DPF) parameters.

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU)

    Bosch EDC17CV41

A used or new ECU cannot simply be plugged in; it must be programmed/flashed by a dealer or tuning specialist to match the machine's VIN, immobilizer, and emission control (AdBlue/DPF) parameters.
