178

Case IH 178 – TMF (Tractor Multifunction Controller) / PTO Controller: PTO speed sensor has been changed.

Issue description

The controller detects a mismatch between the tractor's programmed PTO configuration (single-speed vs. dual-speed) and the physical signals it is receiving from the PTO shaft size/speed sensor circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • MX Magnum Series
  • TG Series
  • Magnum Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Farmall Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the tractor is equipped with a single-speed (1000 RPM) or dual-speed PTO configuration.

  2. If single-speed PTO (moisture cause): Inspect Connector 146M on the rear axle harness for moisture, dirt, or corrosion bridging the pins.

  3. If dual-speed PTO (wiring cause): Check harness continuity from Pin 12 of connector C056 to Pin A of connector C336, and from Pin B of C336 to chassis ground.

  4. If dual-speed PTO (sensor cause): Test the shaft size sensor resistance with a multimeter (should read approximately 3,000 ohms).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to protect the TMF controller.

  2. Address Moisture (If Single-Speed PTO)

Locate connector 146M at the rear axle harness. Thoroughly dry the connector using compressed air. Pack the connector with dielectric grease and install a proper blanking cap/plug to permanently seal it against future moisture ingress.

  3. Replace Sensor (If Dual-Speed PTO & Failed Resistance Test)

Locate the PTO speed sensor on the transmission/rear axle housing. Disconnect the wiring harness (C336). Unthread the faulty variable reluctance speed sensor from the housing. Thread in the new OEM speed sensor and torque to factory specifications. Reconnect the harness, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

  4. Reconfigure/Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. If the controller lost its configuration, use the dealer service tool or the armrest display to verify the PTO is correctly configured as either single or dual-speed. Clear the stored TMF 178 fault code and test PTO engagement.
